Wood and solid wood furniture

Wood is a natural material and no two pieces of wood are the same. Usually, for our furniture, we use oak, walnut, ash and elm. Minor knots, visible growth marks and color variations are part of the natural look of the wood. The pieces of wood for furniture are always selected and assembled according to the shade, color and the structure of the wood, so that it looks technically and constructively correct . There may be variations in color shades and wood texture from one piece of furniture to another. Solid wood is a living material that is affected by daylight, temperature and humidity. The ideal relative humidity for room with solid wood furniture is between 30% and 60%.

Solid wood furniture and daylight

The color of wooden pieces of furniture matures over time if the furniture is exposed to daylight. The biggest color change most often occurs at the beginning of the lifespan of wooden furniture. Vases, coasters, ornaments, etc. can leave dark areas on the surface of wooden pieces if left in the same place for a long time. Solid wood furniture is not recommended to be exposed to the direct sunlight.

Solid wood furniture and water

Solid wood furniture cannot withstand water or similar liquids in large quantities. If liquid is spilled on wooden furniture, it should be wiped off immediately to avoid damage and discoloration of the wood. Large amounts of water spilled on wooden furniture that are not wiped off can cause cracks in the wood or warp the furniture.

Solid wood furniture and humidity

Atmospheric humidity has a great influence on solid wood furniture. Wood breathes and naturally adapts to the environment in which it is located. Furniture made of solid wood must not be placed in a room where the humidity fluctuates a lot, because large fluctuations in the humidity can cause cracks in the wood and loosen the glued joints.

Solid wood furniture and heat

Solid wood furniture must not be placed near heat sources such as radiators or wood stoves. Large fluctuations in heat can lead to cracks in the wood. Also, solid wood furniture must not be stored in unheated rooms.

Glass

Glass, a material renowned for its transparency, has been utilized by humans for millennia. It is created through a process involving the meticulous blending of quartz sand, soda, and limestone, followed by heating the mixture to a specific temperature determined by the desired composition. This fusion results in a biologically inert and chemically stable substance that exhibits exceptional resistance to wear and tear.
Classified as an exceptionally hard material, glass ranks between 5 and 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness, surpassing the hardness of marble, which falls at 4. The glass commonly employed in the manufacturing of our furniture designs typically measures between 10 and 12 millimeters in thickness, ensuring both durability and aesthetic appeal.

Rocks, the building blocks of our planet, can be classified into three primary groups based on their formation processes:

Sedimentary Rocks

These rocks are created through the gradual accumulation and compaction of sediments, such as sand, silt, and clay. Over time, these sediments are cemented together to form layers of rock. Examples of sedimentary rocks include sandstone, limestone, and shale.

Igneous Rocks

Formed from the cooling and solidification of molten rock, known as magma when it’s underground and lava when it erupts onto the surface, igneous rocks exhibit a wide range of textures and compositions. Granite, a common igneous rock, is characterized by its coarse-grained structure and exceptional strength. Its durability and low maintenance requirements make it an ideal choice for various interior applications, including floors and kitchen countertops.

Metamorphic Rocks

When existing sedimentary or igneous rocks are subjected to intense heat and pressure deep within the Earth’s crust, they undergo a transformation process called metamorphism, resulting in the formation of metamorphic rocks. Marble, a well-known metamorphic rock derived from limestone, is renowned for its softer texture, porous nature, and captivating range of colors and patterns. While marble offers a more aesthetically pleasing appearance, it requires periodic impregnation to maintain its luster and protect it from stains. Its suitability is primarily limited to surfaces like tables, dressers, and shelves, as it is less resistant to scratches and moisture compared to granite, making it less suitable for kitchen countertops or stairs.
